The 2019 Beitou Cooling Summer Festival celebrates the beauty of Beitou’s traditions and culture, by bringing local communities together and breathing new life into the cooling summer scene.
Time| 7/13 SAT. - 8/25 SUN.
Venue| Special Exhibition Area, 2F, Beitou Hot Spring Museum
Taiwan’s first railway-themed tour package ever? The beginning of leisure culture in modern Taiwanese history?
How far back can Taiwan’s exuberant evening activities be traced? The answer may not be verifiable, but according to literature, one particular summertime leisure activity swept the island during the period of Japanese rule—the Grand Nōryō (Cooling Summer) Festival. The event was designed as a mini-tour that combined train rides and local leisure activities. Railway trips, hot spring baths, and fun fairs provided great ways to escape the summer heat.
Keeping Cool on Summer Nights—Cool Summer Traditions in Beitou is a special exhibition that highlights the Nōryō festival in what is now the Beitou area. By celebrating the hundred year old tradition, we hope to navigate the possibilities of the area. Keep cool and join us for the summer fun!
Artistic Installations
Sound of the Cooling Summer:
Water Chimes
|Venue|
Large Bath, 1F, Beitou Hot Spring Museum
Sparkling water chimes hang from the ceiling with pendulum bobs gently touching the surface of the water. Chimes play their beautiful and refreshing songs as they move with the flowing water and blowing breezes. Just relax and relish the cool atmosphere created by the sound of the water chimes.
Take a Break:
Outdoor Relaxing Installations
|Venue|
Beitou Hot Spring Museum Lawn
These installations are inspired by ordinary wood basins and other objects used in bath houses. With basins placed upside down, the work conveys the idea of turning the “heat” of hot spring bathing into “coolness”. Visitors can sit on these upside-down basin seats for a break and to enjoy a relaxing time with friends.
